Big Ed Returns To Alchemy

Feb. 14
February 12, 2007

It's funny that Connecticut hard rock quintet Big Ed will be playing Alchemy in New Haven this February 14, considering in 2003 the night club barred it from ever playing there again.

"We have this song called 'Twinkie,' where people bring Twinkies and throw them and before you know it, a big Twinkie fight breaks out," explained guitarist/songwriter Randy Massey.

But the bar back complained about the interactive stage show after he got hit with golden cake and cream fodder from the band's "Twinkie missile." Big Ed was henceforth banned from ever performing at Alchemy again. But upon strong demand from its fans, the band was allowed back.

Now Big Ed is about to play its seventh show there, Hostess treats and all.

"At first they said we can't bring Twinkies, but we told them that compromises our artistic integrity," said Massey. "Now we bring Twinkies."

The show is dubbed the "St. Valentine's Day Massacre," and is hosted by UltraRadio.com. It's an appropriate title, because according to Massey, Big Ed stage shows are known for fun-loving, hard-rocking intensity, not for love songs.

The band has a couple of ballads for its yet-to-be-released second album "The Chronicles of Butter" (the first album, "Eggs," was released in 2005,) but Massey isn't sure if his group is ready to perform them.

"We do a lot of mellow stuff in practice, and we were debating on breaking them out on Valentine's Day," said Massey. "But we have to feel the crowd out. Half the time we don't even play with a set list."

The show begins at 8:30 p.m., but Big Ed will take the stage at 10 p.m. Kaivus, Filthy Little Whores and Eyes of the Dead are all scheduled to perform as well.

Alchemy is located at 223 College Street. Admission is free and there will be free food as well. More information at www.gotbiged.com/home.htm .
