BIG ED

As a band, Big ED has been playing local venues for about a year, but its members have known each other since the Nintendo days.
The guys from North Branford - Cliff Cronan, Phil 'Master P' Jacobs, Matt Getzewich and Mike Deloughery - and the one from East Haven - Randy Massey - are greater New Haven's newest party band. We're not talking weddings and covers, we're talking high-energy shows, fun, rock and beer.
"We just love to play out," says Cronan, who became the band's frontman by default after they formed and found they had an overstock of guitarists. "I said I'd sing until we got a singer and, well, I'm still doin' it."
With Cronan on vocals, Jacobs handles drums and Getzewich the bass. Deloughery - whose father is the band's namesake - plays guitar with Massey, who plays lead guitar and handles the bulk of the band's writing duties.
Big ED's shows continue to grow, including their ever-popular Babe of the Month shows at Side Street Grille, 15 Dickerman St., Hamden, 203-407-1539 ... the winner gets $100 and their photo on www.gotbiged.com. They aren't "really a studio band," says Cronan, though they're heading in to record their demo this month.
But for these "five good guys," it isn't about getting a deal to go play stadium shows that drives them, "though we'd be on the bus tomorrow" if the offer came, says Cronan.
For these guys, it's about putting on a performance and about being with friends.
Deloughery and Jacobs have known each other for years and own a flooring company together.
Cronan and Massey have known each other since the parks and recreation days, when "he kicked my ass," says the band's frontman. "I'm still planning my revenge."
Those who haven't seen Big ED perform should check them out simply for their renditions of some popular tunes like The Beatles' Dear Prudence and Neil Young's Rockin' in the Free World.
The guys took their "Big Ed-isizing" to a new level when the retooled the Beastie's No Sleep 'til Brooklyn and swapped it for No Sleep 'til East Haven.
